HOW DOES THE DIET WORK - THE EVIDENCE BEHIND THE DIET STRATEGY
RESEARCH :
There is a substantial body of research providing good evidence that foods which are fermented by the bacterial microbiome in the large bowel trigger the symptoms of IBS.
Exclusion diets to remove foods that trigger symptoms have been used for many decades as a remedy for IBS, and clinical studies have demonstrated that excluding certain foods reduces IBS symptoms.
Clinical studies by Doctors and IBS Dietitians have consistently demonstrated that the colon is much more sensitive than normal in people with IBS and this is likely to be a fundamental characteristic of IBS.
Clinical studies of diets designed to reduce colonic microbiome fermentation have been reported to be effective in the treatment of IBS
Extensive high quality research has now demonstrated that easily fermented food components increase IBS symptoms and their exclusion results in significant improvement in IBS symptoms.

OUR DIET IS :
SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE
FOR IBS RELIEF :
Diet treatment for IBS are now recommended by many medical and allied national associations (such as the British Dietetic Association (BDA), British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) as treatment for IBS both in the UK and abroad.
Our dietary strategy is also based on reducing colonic fermentation but has been developed over 3 decades in clinical practice to be more straightforward than most others and therefore easier to follow.
It is designed to be short term and includes a re-introduction phase during which most foods can usually be re-introduced. This avoids long term nutritional deficiency that can be associated with some diets. Our diet booklets list the Best and the Worst foods for IBS symptoms.
Our clinical experience with the diet has suggested that after a period of settling IBS symptoms on the diet, the sensitivity of the bowel to fermenting foods is reduced and so foods can be reintroduced.
However, if foods can not be introduced adequately we suggest alternatives that can be used and for some who continue to have a restricted diet assessment by a qualified dietitian is recommended.
